The Broadfield Slopes Project

The Grade II listed area surrounding Rochdale Town Hall known as the Broadfield Park Slopes is open to the public, with restored historical water features, accessible pathways and heritage interpretation trails.

A large sculpture of a horse's head is engulfed in flames at night. A crowd watches the spectacle, some holding torches, in a park-like setting with trees and lights.

Broadfield Park Slopes hosted a torch lit procession in 2025 as part of the Ignite Fire Festival.

In 2025, we carried out a project to improve the area including:

  • Reinstating the pond and restoring the Packer Spout fountain, bringing historical water features back to life.
  • Delivering work placements to local college and university students, developing heritage skills and building inspiration.
  • Uncovering history, with over 500 people joining our Big Dig 3.0 to help uncover Rochdale’s past and share its stories.
  • Creating artwork and sharing stories through creative workshops exploring the history of Rochdale.
  • Making an accessible path to the Packer Spout Fountain, opening up this piece of our history for the first time.
  • Installing new lighting and CCTV, making the area safer and easier to use.
  • Adding new landscaping, creating a healthier environment and a home for more plants and animals.
  • Creating new interpretation trails, including a historical 3D model, benches and pathway roundels, offering engaging learning experiences for visitors.
