Mayor's Entrance

This small room has seen some big changes in its time.

It’s always been the entrance to the grand, mayoral rooms but it also used to be at the base of the clocktower. The window ahead was actually the main doorway.

The Town Hall’s original clocktower was destroyed by a spectacular fire in 1883. The following year, a new architect was tasked with creating a new one. It is Alfred Waterhouse’s tower that stands tall above the town today.

To avoid using the original foundations of the first tower, the new one sits a few metres to the east and is joined to the building by a bridge on the first floor.
